Elementær.ræk.værk

 Den integrerede institution Globen, Magleparken, Ballerup, 2013

Elementær.ræk.værk er en udsmykning lavet i 2011-13 i forbindelse med et nybyggeri til den integrerede institution Globen, der ligger i Magleparken, Ballerup. Udsmykningen tager udgangspunkt i den tidligere institution Tusindfryd og dens historie.

Udsmykningen består af 54 relieffer lagt ind i eller placeret på væggen i en lang gang (90 x 150 m). Alle bestanddele er af træ og elementer fra den gamle børnehave Tusindfryd. I gulvet er der indlagt farvede linoleumsfelter, der danner et brud i den ellers monotome gulvflade, og fungerer som en slags hinkeruder. Reliefferne har referencer til patchwork-mønstre og byggeklodser, og flere fungerer som dukkehuse eller små legehuse, fingerskateboardbaner, pegebilleder eller lignende interaktive felter, hvor man kan åbne en låge og putte ting ind i forskellige hulrum.

Værket blev skabt på stedet over tre måneder. Da Tusindfryd lukkede og blev forladt, fik vi en uge til at vælge og udtage elementer og detaljer til udsmykningen. Et værksted blev installeret mellem den nye og den gamle institution, hvor børn og pædagoger kunne komme forbi og følge med i processen.

Inddragelse – leg og fri læring

Den gamle institution Tusindfryd blev tegnet af arkitekten Tutti Lütken i 1960’erne. Et kendetegn ved hendes arbejde var elementet ”Tuttiflex” – plader og stopler, der som enheder kunne bygges videre på og omformes, alt efter, hvordan man ville have det – en inddragende og byg-selv-videre-strategi for designet. Jeg ville gerne bevare og arbejde videre med den strategi i udsmykningen og lod det være et af omdrejningspunkterne. Gennem 40 år har børn og personale bygget og malet videre på Tusindfryd og jeg ville gerne inddrage den historie i udsmykningen. Tidligere medarbejdere og børn, der kommer på besøg, kan se, at deres historie er fulgt med og værdsættes. De kan genkende gamle vægmalerier og udendørsbeklædning, farvede stole mm.

Et andet omdrejningspunkt for Elementær.ræk.værk var Frederich Fröbel, grundlæggeren af begrebet ’kindergarten’, og hans praktisk baserede pædagogiske teori omkring udviklingen af børns formsprog fra det abstrakte til det konkrete(figurative). Det skulle ske gennem styret leg med papir, farvede tændstikker, byggeklodser, syning i karklude, geometriske puslespil mm. Alt sammen noget, der fortsat indgår som en naturlig del af aktiviteterne i børnehaver i dag, men som man ikke længere tænker over er noget særlig ’Fröbelsk’.

Elementær.ræk.værk er en funktionel og inddragende udsmykning lavet til børn ud fra principper hentet fra to centrale skikkelser i den danske børnehaves historie med fokus på leg og fri læring. Værket fortæller både om Tusindfryds specifikke historie og mere generelt om børneinstitutioner i Danmark.

Elementary.Rail.Ing

The integrated institution Globen, Magleparken, Ballerup, 2013

Elementary.Rail.Ing is a decoration created in 2011-2013 in connection with the construction of new buildings for the integrated institution Globen located in Magleparken, Ballerup. The decoration is inspired by the old institution Tusindfryd and its history.

The decoration consists of 54 reliefs placed on the wall of a long hallway (90 x 150 m). All of the elements are made of wood and was found in the former institution. Colored areas of linoleum have been laid in the floor, creating a break in the otherwise monotone surface of the floor, and functioning as a kind of hopscotch. The reliefs bear references to patch-work patterns and building blocks, and some of them function as small doll- or playhouses, finger skateboard-lanes, pointing-images or similar interactive fields, where the children can open up a small door and place things in different openings.

The work was created on site during three months. When Tusindfryd was closed and abandoned, we had one week to choose elements and details for the new decoration. A studio was installed between the new and the old institution, where children and the staff could drop by and follow the process.

Participation – play and free learning

The old institution was designed by the danish architect Tutti Lütken in the 1960’s. A characteristic of her work was the element “Tuttiflex” – boards and stoppers that as units could be built on and transformed, depending on how you wanted it – an engaging build-yourself strategy for the design. I wanted to preserve and develop that strategy in the decoration, and show that through 40 years, children and staff have been building, painting and creating their own institution. Elementary.Rail.Ing includes these stories in the shaping of the new institution. Former staff and children that visits will know that their stories have been included and are appreciated. They recognize old wall paintings, painted chairs and more.

Another central aspect of the work is Frederich Fröbel, the founder of the concept ‘kindergarten’, and the Practical based theory that the abstract designlanguage leads to the figurative. And taht it should be taught with games of paper, colored matches, building blocks, stitching in cloth and geometrical puzzles. All of which are natural parts of the activities in kindergarten today, but isn’t perceived as anything particularly ‘Fröbel’.

Elementary.Rail.Ing is a functional and engaging decoration created for children from the principles of two central figures in the history of the Danish kindergarten with a focus on play and free learning. The work bears references to the specific history of Tusindfryd and more generally of the Danish care institutions.
